WHEN PROPHETS BECAME MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS

There was a time when the pulpit trembled under the weight of God’s Word. When men and women did not ascend the platform to be liked, applauded, or followed—but to deliver a message that might cost them everything. The prophet did not ask how the people would respond; he only asked whether God had spoken. Today, that question has been replaced with another: How will this make them feel?

Somewhere along the way, prophets were replaced with presenters. The fire of “Thus saith the Lord” was exchanged for polished phrases, catchy slogans, and emotional reassurance. Conviction gave way to comfort. Repentance was replaced by encouragement. The pulpit, once a place of holy confrontation, became a stage for inspiration without transformation.

This did not happen overnight. It happened gradually—quietly—strategically. Truth was not outright denied; it was softened. Sin was not confronted; it was reframed. Judgment was not rejected; it was postponed indefinitely. And in the process, the prophetic voice of the church was muted, dulled, and domesticated.

Motivational preaching is not evil in itself—but when motivation replaces confrontation, and affirmation replaces repentance, the church becomes energized but unchanged. People leave inspired but not convicted, uplifted but not transformed, comforted but not corrected. The soul feels good, yet remains bound.

The prophet was never called to soothe the flesh. He was sent to wake the conscience. He was never commissioned to preserve comfort, but to expose rebellion. The true prophetic voice does not blend in with the culture—it stands against it. When prophets became motivational speakers, the pulpit lost its teeth.

And a toothless pulpit cannot bite sin.

It can only smile at it.
