SHAME ON YOU, NAVAL ACADEMY!

The U.S. Naval Academy, established in 1845, has a rich history that reflects the changing tides of American society, particularly in regard to diversity. From its early days, the Academy has been a battleground for ideas, where the doctrines of inclusion and representation have gradually paved the way. Today, the vision of a military that recognizes and celebrates diversity is not merely an ideal but a foundational value, essential for future military leaders. Diversity enriches the fabric of military service, fostering innovative thinking and enhancing operational effectiveness. As the Academy continues to evolve, it embraces the contributions of all who serve, acknowledging the significant roles played by minorities throughout history. For instance, during the Civil War, approximately 33,000 Black men served valiantly as sailors, making substantial contributions to the Union's naval efforts. Their stories, intertwined with the broader narrative of the Navy, remind us that diversity is not a new concept but rather a legacy to which the Academy should remain dedicated.
